Edward G. Robinson is a cunning and stalwart figure who becomes intimately involved in a doppelganger-based plot of kidnapping and extortion. The staff of a bank is captured and their unlikely doubles are set in place to remove suspicion. As the police get closer to the root of the criminal plan, Sir George McDowell engages them all in a high-stakes game of chess, and a more sinister game in which the kidnapping victim' lives are at stake.
