Johnny is a little boy growing up during the 1960s in Belfast. To outsiders his middle class life seems perfect with the grand Gothic house that he and his parents live in. But not all is as it seems. His father is violent and unable to show Johnny affection, and Johnny has trouble in school. He hears stories of a far off land, called Jamaica that intrigue and delight him, and he dreams of this magical and exciting land in the Caribbean with its exotic people and tropical weather.

In order to cope with his harsh reality, he fantasizes about running away and becoming a stowaway in order to travel to this far away land and work on a plantation. His dreams may soon become a reality when he resolves to run away once and for all after a bad day at school caused by bad grades and a fight between his mother and father.
