Samurai Marathon is a thrilling action-packed drama film directed by Bernard Rose and is based on a true story in feudal Japan. The movie is set in the late 18th century where a feudal lord named Itakura Katsuakira (Hiroki Hasegawa) organizes a marathon race in his province to test the physical endurance and martial skills of his samurai, as well as to impress the Shogun in Edo.

However, the race quickly takes a dark turn when a British envoy named Commodore Perry (Danny Huston) arrives in Japan with ulterior motives. He plans to use the race as an opportunity to attack the unsuspecting Japanese lord and take over his domain, with the help of his Japanese ally, Lord Matsumae (Naoto Takenaka).

As the race progresses, the samurai face challenges and obstacles of both physical and emotional nature. Along with running, they must use their combat skills to navigate through the rugged terrain, avoid traps and ambushes set up by their enemies, and stay alive till the finish line. Meanwhile, the lord's daughter, Yuki (Nana Komatsu), who is also participating in the race, discovers the British conspiracy and decides to warn her father.

The movie showcases stunning cinematography and authentic period costumes, which transport the viewers to the era of feudal Japan. The fight sequences are choreographed brilliantly, with the actors displaying impressive athleticism and swordsmanship. The story is engaging and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats with its unexpected twists and turns.

Danny Huston delivers an unforgettable performance as Commodore Perry, portraying the British envoy as a cunning and ruthless adversary who stops at nothing to achieve his goals. Takeru Satoh, who plays the lead samurai, Jinnai Karasawa, is equally impressive in his portrayal of a loyal and determined warrior who rises up to protect his lord and his people.

The movie also explores several themes, including loyalty, honor, and nationalism, which are prevalent in Japanese culture. It highlights the cultural divide between Japan and the West during the 19th century and sheds light on the historical events that shaped Japan's modern identity.

Overall, Samurai Marathon is an excellent movie that combines action, drama, and historical elements to create a unique cinematic experience. It is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys period dramas, martial arts movies, or Japanese culture.

Samurai Marathon is a 2020 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 44 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.2.
