Louis lives his life as hermit, is very protective of his home and keeps a cool distance from his family. He is concerned cold and aloof and has worked to build a world that is impenetrable to others. When Louis discovers that he needs a heart transplant, his rigid mentality even extends to the specifications of his wanting the heart of a younger man and not that of an old-timer or woman. After the transplant, Louis visits Tahiti to catch up with the son that he abandoned long ago. He struggles to make amends before his death with a son he has never known.
