In the movie The Woman in Black 2, we find ourselves once again in the small English town of Crythin Gifford, where a group of children and their caretakers take shelter at Eel Marsh House during World War II. The eerie mansion, now abandoned and falling to pieces, was once the home of the reclusive Alice Drablow, whose ghost is said to still haunt the premises.

The newcomers are led by Jean Hogg (Helen McCrory), a stern and no-nonsense individual who lost her husband in the war and is struggling to keep her charges safe and out of harm's way. The children, ranging from young to teenage, are understandably hesitant and frightened by their surroundings, but soon start exploring the hallways and rooms of the crumbling mansion.

One of the older girls, Eve (Phoebe Fox), strikes up a friendship with a local boy, Harry (Jeremy Irvine), who lost his parents in an air raid and now lives with his reclusive guardian, a blind man named Hermit (Adrian Rawlins). Harry warns Eve about the dangers of Eel Marsh House and recounts the tale of the Woman in Black, a vengeful spirit who appears before anyone who sees her and brings death and destruction in her wake.

As the group settles into their temporary home, Eve starts experiencing strange and unsettling visions and nightmares, and the children begin disappearing one by one. Soon, Jean realizes that something malevolent is at work in Eel Marsh House and sets out to uncover the truth behind the haunted mansion and its tragic past.

The Woman in Black 2 is a well-crafted horror film that relies on atmosphere and tension rather than cheap thrills and jump scares. The setting of the abandoned mansion is perfectly rendered, with creaky floors, fluttering curtains, and flickering candles creating an air of foreboding and dread. The sound design is also remarkable, with ominous echoes and unexplained noises adding to the overall sense of unease.

The cast does an excellent job of fleshing out their characters and making us care about their fates. Helen McCrory is formidable as the strict and no-nonsense Jean, who is haunted by her own memories of loss and grief. Phoebe Fox is sympathetic as Eve, a vulnerable and conflicted young woman who is forced to confront her own fears and doubts. Jeremy Irvine is a charming and courageous hero, who despite his own traumas is willing to stand up to the unknown terrors lurking in Eel Marsh House.

The movie also explores themes of grief, trauma, and guilt, as the characters try to come to terms with their personal losses and regrets. The war is a constant presence in the background, with the ruins and rubble of bombed buildings serving as a reminder of the brutality and devastation of conflict.

Overall, The Woman in Black 2 is a worthy successor to its predecessor, capturing the same Gothic atmosphere and eerie suspense that made the original such a classic. While it may not break new ground in terms of storytelling or scares, it delivers a solid and satisfying horror experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

The Woman in Black 2 is a 2015 horror movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 39 minutes.
