20. Infamous Places - The Great Train Robbery, England and Ayrton Senna's Death
January 1, 2015
On August 8, 1963, fifteen men held up the post office train en route from Glasgow to London. This was one of the most successful thefts in British history. Ayrton Senna died at the age of 34 during a race in Italy in 1994. The Brazilian racing driver was mourned around the world, and his achievements continue to live on in history.
19. Infamous Places - Cuban Missile Crisis
January 1, 2015
October 14, 1961, the United States spotted missile launching sights being constructed in Cuba. The United States had previously deployed 15 Jupiter nuclear missiles in Turkey, and Russia saw this as a direct threat. Russia reacted immediately by building missile launching sites in Cuba. This was the start of the stand off between Russia and the U.S.which ended on October 28.

In the late 1880's, Buck's Row, an area of Whitechapel in the east end of London was famous for the number of women working as prostitutes who were mutilated and murdered. No one really knows who Jack the Ripper was, or how many of the 11 or so bodies of women murdered were his victims, and we will probably never know.
17. Infamous Places - Lockerbie, Scotland and The Tower of London

On December 21, 1988 a Pan Am flight took off from Heathrow to New York when a bomb exploded onboard. Victims and debris were scattered 130 miles across the southwest of Scotland. One of Britain's most notable landmarks is The Tower of London. Its many uses were: fortress, palace, prison of torture and execution, as well as a menagerie with leopards and lions.

In 1936 Germany's Ministry paid the town of Wolgast 750,000 reichmarks for the exclusive use of an area near the Peene River as an army research center. This site was used for the development of the V2 rocket and all modern rockets, including the Saturn Five moon rocket. The site was also used to launch rockets against the Allies during WWII.
15. Infamous Places - King Tut's Tomb and Assassination of King Alexander

King Tut died when he was 18 years old from gangrene. He has been dead for over 3300 years, and is still the most famous and recognizable ancient Egyptian figure. King Alexander of Yugoslavia was shot by a gunman while in France in October 1934. His death was recorded by a cameraman on the scene, and has become one of the earliest historical newsreels.
14. Infamous Places - Watts Riots, Los Angeles and Bikini Atoll

August 1965, Marquette Frye was pulled over by California Highway Patrol on suspicion of drunk driving. Riots broke out in Watts for six days, 34 people killed and 35 million dollars worth of damage. Between 1946 and 1958, the United States conducted more than 20 nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The deadly radiation affected both people and animals.
13. Infamous Places - Mount St. Helen's and Martin Luther King

May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helen's in the state of Washington erupted, causing 57 deaths and 7,000 big game animals. It was the deadliest volcanic eruption in the United States. Martin Luther King was shot in the throat on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was one of the most beloved and revered figures in recent American history.
12. . Infamous Places - Kursk Submarine, Russia and Bradford Stadium Fire, UK

Russian Kursk, the largest attack submarine ever built, went on a dummy mission in August 2000. An explosion killed most of the crew while others died when they could not be reached. In May 1985, a day meant to be a celebration for the Bradford City Football Club ended in tragedy when 56 people died in a fire which broke out in the stadium.

A 9.3 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand on December 26, 2004. The largest earthquake ever recorded resulted in 220,000 deaths. The earthquake lasted eight minutes, one of the longest earthquakes ever recorded. The tsunami caused thousands of casualties and cost for aid amounted to 7 billion U.S. dollars.
10. Infamous Places - The Invasion of Poland and Twin Towers, New York

Hitler invaded Poland in September 1939 with a battleship which shelled the Polish garrison for days. With 2600 Germans against just 205 Polish, Poland surrendered on September 7. Hitler celebrated a victory. The Twin Towers were 110 stories high, built in 1972. On September 11, 2001 they were brought down by hijacked airplanes, killing over 2600 and some still missing to this day.
9. Infamous Places - Munich Air Disaster and Hurricane Katrina, USA

In February 1958 Manchester United football team chartered a plane, stopping to refuel in snow bound Munich. Disaster struck as the plane failed to reach altitude killing eight players and fifteen passengers. In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast of the United States killing 1800 and causing billions of dollars of damage. It was one of the most devastating hurricanes in US. history.
8. Infamous Places - New London School, Texas and SS Normandie, New York harbor
January 1, 2015
On March 18th, 1937, the New London School in Texas was destroyed by an explosion caused by a gas leak and at least 300 people died. On February 9th, 1940, the SS Normandie was moored at pier 88 in New York harbor when fire broke out caused by a spark from a welding torch. By 2:45 the next morning the ship had capsized.
7. Infamous Places - Texas Sniper and Chernobyl, Russia

On August 1st, 1966, student Charles Joseph Whitman killed his wife and mother, then barricaded himself in the tower of the University of Austin, Texas. He then started shooting, killing 14 people and injuring 29 before he was killed by police. Chernobyl, April 26th, 1986, still remains the worst ever nuclear accident of its kind.

On December 7th. 1941 the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japanese forces. There were heavy losses, 2403 deaths and 1178 were wounded. The raid began at 7:48am and was over in just 90 minutes.

On the August 6th 1945 a US B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, dropped a nuclear bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. eighty thousand people were killed outright and an estimated sixty thousand died in the following months.
4. Infamous Places - The Suez Canal, Egypt, Andrea Doria, Nantucket and Little Rock High School, Arkansas

The Suez Canal in Egypt was one of the most strategically important water ways in the world during the mid 50s. July 1956, 46 passengers died when the ocean liner Andrea Doria was involved in a collision off the coast of Nantucket. On September 4th 1957 a white mob gathered in front of the Little Rock High School to prevent black students from entering and the National Guard was deployed.
3. Infamous Places - The Hindenburg, Lindbergh Kidnapping and Graceland

On the May 6th 1937 the Hindenburg airship burst into flames at New Jersey's Lakehurst Naval air station killing 13 passengers, 22 crew and 1 member of the ground crew. In March 1932 the Lindbergh farm in Hopewell, New Jersey, became the center of a criminal investigation remembered as the case of the century. Graceland, the Memphis mansion, was home to Elvis Presley until his death in 1977.

The Berlin Wall. From August 1961 to November 1989, a thin strip of land over 150 kilometers long was one of the most infamous places in the world. The Mid Atlantic ocean on the night of April 14th 1912, at 11.40 pm the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank two hours and forty minutes later.

Dealey Plaza, 1962, the place where John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he rode in his open limousine with his wife Jacqueline. Place de I'Alma, 1997, the place where Princess Diana and her lover Dodi Al Feyed were killed in a fatal car crash.
