Love My Way is an Australian drama series created by John Edwards and Claudia Karvan, produced by Southern Star. It first premiered on the Australian subscription television network, Foxtel in November 2004 and ran until 2007. The series revolves around the lives of four very different people, all struggling to find themselves and their place in the world in the midst of various personal crises.
The series starts with Alice (Claudia Karvan), a fiercely independent single mother and successful interior designer, living with her two children, 16-year-old son, Lou (Alex Cook) and 8-year-old daughter, Frankie (Dan Wyllie). Alice is struggling with her ex-partner, the father of her two children, who is battling addiction and seems to be a constant source of trouble. Alice is also dealing with the fact that she is approaching 40 and is feeling lonely.
Adding to the mix is Alice's younger sister, Frankie (Asher Keddie), who is a rebellious 27-year-old, searching for herself and struggling with her own demons. Frankie is passionate about music and has a toxic relationship with her boyfriend, Charlie (Daniel Wyllie). She is also keeping secrets from Alice, which leads to some of the dramatic moments in the series.
Lewis (Ben Mendelsohn) also features in Love My Way as the third member of the drama's central quartet. Lewis is Alice's friend from university, who she has always been in love with, but he has never felt the same way about her. Lewis is a complex character, battling his own demons, and like the other characters in the show, never quite gets life right.
The fourth member of the central quartet is Julia (Justine Clarke), a former flame of Lewis's, who returns to Sydney after years away in London, a successful lawyer and Lewis's boss. Julia's arrival disrupts the delicate balance of the group and lead to lots of tension between her and Alice.
Love My Way was groundbreaking for Australian television in the early 2000s. The show tackled difficult social issues with intelligence, sensitivity, and complexity. The relationships between the characters were raw, sometimes brutal, and so very authentic, drawing the viewer into their lives and struggles as they attempted to navigate new relationships, careers, families, and personal demons.
