My Horrible Boss is a South Korean drama television series that debuted in 2016. The show follows the lives of four employees working under a tyrannical boss who makes their life a living hell. Lee Yo-won plays Eun Hwan-ki, a quiet, introverted woman who struggles with social anxiety and a fear of people. She is the head of the public relations department at Brain PR, a large public relations firm. Despite her competence and dedication to her job, Hwan-ki's boss consistently berates her and belittles her in front of her colleagues.
Adding to Hwan-ki's troubles is her assistant, Kang Woo-il played by Yoon Sang-hyun, who is lazy and disrespectful towards her. Woo-il refuses to do his job, often arriving late to work and causing Hwan-ki to take the brunt of the blame for his mistakes. Other characters include section chief Jang Kyung-joon played by Hyun-joon Choi, who is a womanizer with a rocky past, and senior manager Han Jung-tae played by Lim Ha-ryong, who struggles to balance his home life with his demanding job.
As the story unfolds, viewers learn more about each character's backstory and how it has shaped their personalities and work relationships. For example, Hwan-ki's social anxiety stems from a traumatic event in her past which saw her being bullied and humiliated in front of her peers. Similarly, Jang Kyung-joon's promiscuity is revealed to be a coping mechanism for a difficult childhood that left him feeling worthless.
Over the course of the series, the four employees come together to try and find a way to cope with their horrible boss, Lee Yong-joon played by Son Jong-hak, who is unsympathetic and refuses to listen to their grievances. They come up with creative solutions and work together to make sure their voices are heard, all while trying to keep their jobs and maintain their sanity.
One unique aspect of the show is its depiction of mental health issues. Hwan-ki's social anxiety is a central plot point and is tackled in a realistic and sensitive manner. The show also touches on themes of workplace harassment and bullying, as well as the difficulty of maintaining a work-life balance in a competitive and demanding industry.
The show's cast is exceptional, with each actor bringing depth and nuance to their characters. Lee Yo-won is particularly impressive as the lead, delivering a subtle and powerful performance as a woman struggling with anxiety and self-doubt. Yoon Sang-hyun also stands out as the hapless assistant, bringing a comedic touch to the show with his antics and comedic timing.
In addition to the main cast, the show features a host of supporting characters who add to the richness of the story. Kim Sun-young plays Lee Yong-joon's wife, Lee Hang-na, a fiercely ambitious woman who is not afraid to use her connections to further her husband's career. Kwon Hyun-sang and Hwang Chan-sung round out the cast as Hwan-ki's colleagues and confidants, adding humor and camaraderie to the mix.
Overall, My Horrible Boss is a compelling and emotionally resonant drama that explores themes of mental health, workplace harassment, and personal growth. It's a show that will make viewers laugh, cry, and think deeply about the nuances of human relationships and the importance of self-care.
