Once there was a boastful tortoise who lived by a pond. He was always belittling his other friends. When two flashy egrets came to the pond, he made fast friends with them. But when a drought came the egrets wanted to leave. Tortoise persuaded them to take them with him by letting him cling to a twig with his mouth, but when he opened his mouth to boast of flying he fell and got left behind.

12. The Lamb Who Cried Wolf
 
The playful lamb lived on a hill where a hungry wolf also lived. After witnessing the hullabaloo after the wolf tried to attack the flock but was rebuffed by the sheepdog, the lamb decided to play a prank and cry wolf. But after too many pranks the sheepdog stopped responding to the lamb's cries for help, and when a real wolf attack came, the lamb found itself in hot water!

There was a frog who stayed in a well, until a wise turtle came near the well and convinced the little frog that he can become happier if he moves out of the well and stayed in the pond where he can be friends with other frogs. The little frog takes the wise old turtle's advise and moved out of the well and stayed happier in the pond.

There was a beaver who loved building dams. He loved it so much, he started cutting down all the trees around the forest-including the trees that his friends slept in! Angry at his thoughtlessness, the beaver's friends refused to speak to him. The beaver felt guilty about what he had done, and apologized to his friends, promising to be more thoughtful the next time.

The bird, the monkey, the elephant and the rabbit planted some seeds and it grew into a tall berry tree. But it was too tall for them! Unable to reach the top of the tree to grab the berries, the friends, working together as a team, they devised a clever way of climbing on one another's backs to increase their height so they could reach the top of the tree.

There were four friends in the forest who did not quite get along with each other. After one particularly bad argument, the bear morosely left the others, while the remaining three split up and refused to talk to each other. But when winter came, they found themselves all lonely and freezing. So the three friends set off to find Bear, and they all gathered together in a warm, forgiving bear hug.

A thoughtful little kangaroo helped the thirsty old wombat get some water on a hot, dry day. Some time later, when the little kangaroo was nearly exhausted from hopping in all that heat, the wombat repaid the favor of help by creating a pouch for the little kangaroo on her mother's belly. And this, they say, is how the kangaroo got its pouch.

There was a proud rooster who only agreed to join the other farm animals for the harvest feast if they made special steamed vegetables for him. But when he got to the harvest feast, he didn't see the steamed vegetables he wanted, only cornbread. He left in a huge huff. But his friends had actually kept the steamed vegetables under the cornbread. Rooster wronged his friends and had to apologize.

The playful tiger loved to scare all the animals in the forest by pretending to be a monster. The cockatoo, who had wised up to the tiger's tricky ways, decided to give him a taste of his own medicine by teaming up with the other young animals in the forest, and scaring the tiger instead! Tiger found out for himself how unpleasant it was to be scared.

Cheetah was proud of his ability to run really, really, fast. He thought he could do everything! So he tried to swim like his friend Hippo and reach the top of trees like his friend Giraffe. But he couldn't! He was quite upset about it, until his friends showed him that nobody can do everything.

There were a pair of noisy ducks who loved to quack, quack, quack! They didn't care that they were disturbing the peace of the neighborhood, they just wanted to have fun! But when they got into some trouble and had to be helped out, they realized the value of being considerate to others.

The dove befriended a little ant that she saved from drowning in the river, thinking that he was helpless and couldn't get anything done. But later, the ant saved her from danger, and she discovered the value of a true friend, even a small one!

The hummingbirds and the honeybees couldn't decide who had the rights to harvest from a field of flowers, and fought endlessly over it. When winter came, the flowers withered and no one - neither the hummingbirds nor the honeybees - could harvest from them at all! The two groups quickly realized that sharing is a good thing, and that is exactly what they did the following summer.
