Sousei No Aquarion is a science fiction anime series from TV Tokyo, created by anime studio Satelight, with Shoji Kawamori as the director and writer. The story takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth after a great disaster known as "The Great Catastrophe". Humanity has divided into two societies, those who live on the surface, and those who live in an underground city called the "Vector Machine". These societies are constantly at war with each other.
The show's protagonist is Apollo, a young man who has spent most of his life living in the wilderness, outside of society. Apollo is mysterious, strong-willed, and has a strong desire to understand humanity's past. While wandering in the woods, Apollo meets a girl named Silvia de Alisia, a member of a special unit called "Deava". Deava has been formed to pilot the powerful mecha Aquaria.
The Aquaria are three mecha that can combine to form the titular super robot, Aquarion. Aquarion is described by Silvia as the only tool capable of combating the Shadow Angels, powerful and mysterious beings that threaten to destroy all of humanity. Apollo is soon recruited into Deava to become a pilot of one of the Aquaria.
The show features a unique blend of science fiction, action, and drama. The Aquaria pilots must learn to work together in unison to fight the Shadow Angels. The show's themes include human nature, love, and the meaning of life. Sousei No Aquarion explores the concepts of the merging of human souls through the Aquaria pilots, and the emotive power of music.
The show's animation is top-notch, with a mix of traditional hand-drawn techniques and modern computer-generated animation. The robots themselves are beautifully designed, with intricate details and an imposing presence on-screen. The show's music is a major part of the narrative, with a powerful and emotive score composed by Yoko Kanno. The opening and closing themes, "Sousei no Aquarion" and "Omna Magni", are both epic pieces of music that set the tone for the series.
Throughout the series, the characters face challenges both external and internal. There are secrets to uncover, lessons to be learned, and relationships to be tested. The show explores themes of redemption, sacrifice, and the power of love in the face of adversity.
