The Crime of the Century is a documentary miniseries created and directed by award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, and produced by HBO. The show premiered in May 2021 and takes its viewers on an eye-opening journey through the insidiousness of the opioid epidemic that has ravaged the United States for many years.
Patrick Radden Keefe, Edward Byrne, and Kadrolsha Ona Carole serve as the executive producers of the show, bringing many years of journalistic experience and research to the table. The show is divided into two parts, each consisting of two episodes that explore different aspects of the ways in which influential pharmaceutical companies profited from the overprescription of addictive painkillers.
Throughout both parts, The Crime of the Century paints a picture of how the pharmaceutical industry, in collusion with the US government, played a substantial role in causing one of the most significant public health crises in history. The show uses an array of archival footage and interviews with insiders, whistleblowers, former addicts, and victims' families, who share their personal stories and thoughts on the epidemic.
The first two episodes of the series mainly focus on the Sackler family, owners of Purdue Pharma, creators of OxyContin. The show takes the viewers behind the scenes of the sales tactics and aggressive marketing strategies that made OxyContin the most prescribed drug in the US, despite the fact that it was highly addictive and dangerous when abused. The series reveals how Purdue Pharma leveraged the complicity of medical authorities, propaganda machines, and celebrities to promote OxyContin, making it a $35 billion empire at the expense of thousands of lives.
The documentary exposes how the regulatory bodies that were tasked with monitoring such dangerous drugs like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) capitulated to the immense power of Big Pharma, allowing Purdue to continue to profit from an opioid epidemic it had helped create. The show also explores the various efforts of whistleblowers and the internal resistance to these practices from within the regulatory bodies, all of which were systematically ignored
The Crime of the Century is a series that ran for 1 seasons (2 episodes) between May 10, 2021 and on HBO
